The usage of podiatry during running competions at the Tilburg Ten Miles 2007
By: Monique van der Kaa and Anika van Hout, podiatrists
On Sunday the 2nd of september 2007 the running event ‘Tilburg Ten Miles’ was held. The city center of Tilburg was partially closed for traffic. The streets were decorated and walking orchestra’s passed. About 8.000 runners, including several great African runners, prepared themselves for running the renowned English Ten Miles or 16.190 m.
Monique van der Kaa and Anika van Hout, both podiatrists of Podotherapie van der Kaa in Tilburg, were present becasue of the cooperation with Runnersworld Tilburg. Their goal was to help and advice the runners whenever necessary, and of course to encourage them during the race.

Cooperation
The Tilburg Ten Miles is an anual event which starts and finishes in the centre of Tilburg. The participants have a very wide age-range, from small children to older adults.
The event enlarges every year, the number of people that starts to run is also increasing. When lots of people are intensly active with running and walking activities, the need for walking and running specialists (like podiatrists) grows.
Monique van der Kaa has been concentrating her work on running for the past few years. One of the things she did was creating cooperation between her and Geurt Bagchus of Runnersworld Tilburg.
A podiatrist knows a lot about walking/running and ways to influence the walking/running pattern with inlays. However, the (running)shoe is just as important and can be of great influence during gait. The supplies of runningshoes are huge and the shoe characteristics change constantly. This is why it’s important for podiatrists to work together with experts from this area, so the patients can get optimal help and advice.
Monique van der Kaa has consulting-hours in Runnersworld Tilburg on Thursday-evenings once every two weeks. She sees, with Geurt Bagchus, runners who are in need of help and/or advice concerning their running activities. During consulting-hours both specialists analyse the running pattern with the help of video-equipment. Monique also uses her knowledge as podiatrist, while Geurt concentrates on the shoes and training.
